Cantonese operatic songs became immensely popular about a century ago, deeply embedded in everyday life. Decades later, Hong Kong became a vibrant cultural hub connecting East and West, while local music gradually absorbed the charm of Shanghai pop songs and incorporated influences from around the world, eventually giving birth to Hong Kong Cantopop of the late 1970s.
Following the success of last season’s “Endless Love”, highlighting classic Shanghai songs, “Golden Years” continues this musical journey as Yan Huichang leads the orchestra through old Shanghai and Hong Kong songs, set against historical imagery from the Hong Kong Museum of History, evoking romantic soundscapes.
Legendary vocalist Frances Yip, celebrated throughout the Chinese music world, appears on stage with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. Her rich, resonant and deeply expressive voice has created countless timeless classics, her singing a living testament to the development of local popular music. This musical love letter is dedicated to old Hong Kong, evoking youthful memories and bygone eras through enchanting melodies.
